Abstract
Breast cancer is a multifactorial disease and one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide. Its development is influenced by a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. The current study aims to present to the importance of CYP2E1 and CYP3A gene polymorphisms in Iraqi breast cancer patients, to ensure the potential benefits of tailored and improved patient treatment. In the current case-control study, samples from 78 female patients with breast cancer, and 50 apparent healthy female without any symptoms of disease were collected. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood using commercially available genome DNA extraction kit. Genotyping was subsequently performed using the “polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism” method. The results showed that the frequency of the CT heterozygous genotype of the CYP2E1 rs2031920 gene was 35,9% in the breast cancer patients and 24% in the control group , statistically significant difference (P=0.02 , OR=1.77 , 95% CI =0.80 – 3.93 ). Similarly the CYP3A5 rs776746 gene also showed a statistically significant association when comparing patients and healthy control. The AG heterozygous genotypes was present in 42.4% of patients compared to 18% in the control group (P=0.0009, OR=3.34, 95% CI =1.43 – 7.82). These findings indicates significant associations between breast cancer risk and genetic variations in the CYP2E1 (rs2031920) and CYP3A5 (rs776746) genes.
