Performance of Reinforced Concrete Columns Incorporated Recycled Aggregate Concrete and Strengthened with Ferrocement under Eccentric Load

In this paper an experimental program was conducted to investigate the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns made with recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). Twelve square RC columns were tested under axial and eccentric load were examined for the influence of RCA substitution on the load carrying capacity, stiffness, and ductility. The samples were divided into three groups, with RCA replacement levels of 0%, 50%, and 100%. Ferrocement jacketing technique was considered as strengthening method to improve the confinement of the core concrete.



Both jacketed and unjacketed columns were tested on each RCA level. The results showed that the ultimate load capacity decreased as RCA level increased; however, ferrocement jacketing enhanced load carrying capacity through all groups. The greatest increase in the ultimate load was observed in the 0% RCA columns (13.3%), followed by the 50% RCA columns (12.1%) and the 100% RCA columns (9.3%). Under eccentric loading, similar gains were observed, with an enhancement in loading capacity ranging from 10.2% to 11.6%.
