Protective Role of Bromelain and Lactobacillus spp. in Ochratoxin A-Induced Hematological Toxicity in Guinea Pigs

Abstract
Ochratoxin A (OTA), a mycotoxin frequently generated by Aspergillus and Penicillium species, is linked to several toxicological consequences, including hematotoxicity. This study examines the preventive efficacy of bromelain, Lactobacillus spp., and their combination against OTA-induced hematological changes in guinea pigs. Fifty male guinea pigs were divided into five groups: a negative control group, an OTA-only group, an OTA + bromelain group, an OTA + probiotic group, and an OTA + combination therapy group. Over the course of 30 days, the following hematological parameters were monitored: red blood cell (RBC) count, white blood cell (WBC) count, hemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), and platelet count. Results indicated pronounced hematotoxic effects in the OTA-only group, characterized by severe anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia. Bromelain or probiotics alone partially recovered hematological indices, whereas the combined therapy resulted in nearly full recovery, nearing control values. These results highlight the synergistic protective effects of bromelain and Lactobacillus spp., indicating their potential use as natural detoxifiers for treating OTA-induced toxicity in animals.
